SEARCH ENGINE SUBMISSIONS

People on the internet use search engines like Yahoo, Alta Vista, Lycos etc. to find things they want to look at. Being listed on search engines is a good way for people to find you that may not be aware of your business and will increase the amount of people visiting your web site.

There are thousands of search engines out there and knowing which ones to be listed on will take some thought, you don't have to be listed on them all, but being listed on the major one will certainly make a difference.

You can go to each search engine and submit your site to that engine, to do this for just the major search engines may take you 2-3 hours. It is also recommended that this procedure is carried out every 4 weeks.

Web Cambs can take the hassle out of this for you. We can submit your site to all the major search engines for only £29.99 per year, your site will be submitted every month

Initially it can take up to six weeks before some search engines successfully list the submitted web site.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS

We can arrange to visit you to take digital photographs, this is ideal for displaying your premises, staff, or products that are manufactured on site.

For just £50.00 you can have up to 30 high quality digital photographs taken, price includes editing and web optimisation.

DOMAIN NAMES

The purpose of having a domain name is to provide a customer or someone looking for you on the Internet an easy way of finding you. Let's say your name is John Smith, it is far easier to find and remember www.johnsmith.co.uk than something like www.freehostwithbannerads.co.uk/users/www/johnsmith. 

Long web site address are to be avoided. They are hard to remember and too many characters means people may type your address in wrong.

Your domain name should represent your company name or what you do. Try to keep it as short as possible. You can only use the letters A-Z and 0-9 numbers characters like _, &, %, +, and spaces are not allowed although use of the  - (hyphen) is allowed.

There are over 65,000 domain names being registered every day, so even if you don't need a web site just yet, you need to get your domain name registered before someone else does.

There are two main contenders when it comes to domain names .com (Commerce) and .co.uk, (Commerce UK) While .com's are usually connected to US websites a lot of UK companies use this version of domain names. If your serious about you web presence then why not have both (if available) Web Cambs for instance uses .com and .co.uk

If your company appeal's to a world wide audience then a .com domain may be a better name to go for, if on the other hand you prefer to concentrate on a UK or Europe audience then a .co.uk domain may be more appropriate. People will always identify UK sites with a .co.uk domain.

Other domains available are .org (organizations), .net (networks), .org.uk (UK organisations), ltd.uk (for UK Ltd companies only), .plc.uk (PLC companies only).

UK Domain names are registered for 2 year periods. US domains  (.com, .net, .org) are registered from one to ten years.

The web start package includes one .co.uk domain name which is renewable every two years at the current price.

SITE DESIGN

The content of your web site is very important, it should contain relevant information about you or your company, the products you sell or services you provide.  For example if you have a business that sells hats.  You would want to include things such as what brands you sell, styles, accessories and maybe the sizes available, etc... You should also include details such as how to contact you, your hours of operation and your address.  

Adding a contact page can be useful. We can add a feedback form where a user can input information, like their name, address, telephone number and a message, this information can then be sent directly from the website to your email address.

Photographs and/or graphics are a good way of illustrating text on a page. We can scan any images you may like to have on your web site like logos or photographs at no extra cost. We can also come to you and take digital photographs if needed for an additional fee (see below). 

We like to work closely with our clients and letting our clients have as much input about how the site is designed.  Everyone has a different idea about how they want their site to appear to their customers and we want your site to be the way you want it.  If you're not happy, we're not happy.

If you are an individual who wants a site about your hobby or interests or maybe about your family, we can also do this.  No request is too small.

The package price includes the design of a single page, artwork scanning and 12 modifications per year.

The only sites we will not do is anything regarding pornographic, illicit or illegal material.

HOSTING (Web Space)

Once you have a domain name and a web site, you need somewhere to put it.

Hosting is jargon for web space , it is where your web site will be situated on the Internet.
A web site is very much like a building, it needs a place to reside. Imagine you want to build a house. In order to build this house you need to have a plot of land to build it on.  A web site is like a house it needs a place to reside.  This place is called web space (hosting). And like houses, the larger they are, the more space they require. 

A host is a company who can provide you with the space your web site needs to have a presence on the Internet which is available online 24 hours a day 365 day a year.

There are a lot of things to consider with hosting. You may find it for free on the Internet or your Internet service provider may provide you web space with your account.

Often free space involves the host putting a banner advert over your web site (not recommended for commercial sites). There will also be a limit on the space available. Remember, if you chose to use the space provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), this space is only available to you as long as you continue to have your account with them.  If you decide to change ISP's and close your current account, you will lose your web space and will have to start over with your new ISP.

With Web Cambs hosting space, you don't have to worry about whether or not you want to change ISP's.  Your web site will always be available for others to view.

Web space is usually measured in megabytes (Mb), a megabyte is just a bit smaller than the storage space of a floppy disk. It's possible to store a small web site within 1Mb, medium web sites may use 1-5Mb and larger web sites may use 5-10+mb. 

It is almost impossible to say how much space you will need, It's a bit like the "how long is a piece of string" theory.
