• Q: WHAT IS A META TAG ?

  Answer:

  A meta tag is part of the HTML code which makes up your web site page, the content of the tags does not appear on the page itself. These are commonly put in the header of the web page document.

  Well know meta tags are the Description tag which is where a search engine may get the description of your page, the tags basically gives search engines information about your page.

  The tag known as Keywords or Meta Keywords no longer has any importance. This tag basically listed keywords to help search engines find your web site, however, this tag has now been depreciated and most of the main search engines like Google will ignore them.

• Q: WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME?

  Answer:

  A domain name is a name that represents you on the Internet, your domain name can be a company name (providing it's still available).

  A domain name is not your website, the two are different, as you can have more than one domain name pointing to the same website.

  The domain name makes it easier for people to find you on the internet, as your web site will be located on a server, these servers are generally located by IP address which are long numbers, a domain name will basically represent a textual easy to remember version of the IP address, so instead of someone entering 213.159.65.3 to find you, they simply enter your domain name which is much easier to remember.

• Q: WHAT IS HOSTING

  Answer:

  Hosting is a place on the internet that your web site resides, usually this will be a web server that will host your web site making it available to the internet 24/7.

  Think of web hosting as a plot of land for your web site on the internet.

  Not all hosting providers are the same and not one hosting solution is right for everyone. The quality of web hosting can vary and can have a big impact of your web sites performance and also the search engines.

• Q: WHY DO I NEED A WEB SITE?

  Answer:

  Having a website can make a big impact on your overall online presence, in today's world if you're in business and you don't have a website then think what that may look like to a potential customer.

  A website may also allow you to reach customers you would not normally reach. Think of your website as your silent salesman working all day everyday 24/7, with a website your customers will have a brochure at their finger tips anytime of the day, or night.

  No matter if you have a large e-commerce shop or a simple one page website they are equally important to your business and your customers.

• Q: HOW DO I KNOW HOW MANY PAGES I'LL NEED FOR MY WEB SITE?

  Answer:

  The number of pages is determined by how much information you want to put on your web site. A basic web site can have around 4/5 pages but if you just want a web presence you can start with just a single page, more pages can be added as and when you need to.

  Try to think of a web page as roughly the size of an A4 sheet of paper, although a web page can actually be a longer, however long pages are not very user friendly so it is best to keep them as close to A4 size as possible.

• Q: WHAT IS AN ISP?

  Answer:

  ISP is an abbreviation for Internet Server Provider. This is a company who physically connects you to the Internet. There are many ISP companies available, like Virgin, BT, Talk Talk and many, many others.
